UPP strongly condemns the unjust and ongoing detention of UB medical researcher Shogvi Huseynov by ICE and CBP.
On January 7, 2026, Dr. Huseynov was detained after mistakenly making a wrong turn at the Peace Bridge—a common occurrence in Buffalo’s border city—and immediately attempted to reenter the U.S. from the Canadian checkpoint. Despite holding a valid visa that authorizes him to live and work in the United States, ICE has confined him for over a week at the Batavia detention center, signaling possible deportation and providing no timeline for his release.
We demand the immediate release of our colleague and an end to the harm caused by DHS’s erratic and punitive actions in our communities.
